The fauna of Africa is world famous. In addtion to well-known species like Giraffe, Rhino, Elephant, Leopard and Lion, there is also an overwhelming diversity of forms, functions, habitats and geographical distribution of smaller and less conspicuous animals that constitute the majority of the fauna of Africa. Therefore, and due to the limited number of publications, the identification of correct species names in many taxonomic groups is still a problem.
Therefore, this guide aims at rapid identification of species by presenting photographs of them in a phylogenetic order. A number of tools allow users to scan taxonomic groups, like genera and families.
We consider that researchers, students, farmers, tourists and the broader civil society will make use of such a photo guide.
This regional guide is started by the regional SASSCAL project team and we hope that numerous photos from Angola, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa will be added during the coming years.
How can I contribute?:
We would be most grateful if all skilled and interested people and institutions would contribute their photographs in order to attain a photo catalogue fully representing the faunal diversity of the region.
